Personalized
Flight Results

The Context 💭

Corporate bookings are a huge revenue generator for Sabre. With GetThere, corporations can easily find the best travel accommodations for their employees all while staying in policy. I was tasked with creating an entirely new flow to allow for personalized shopping. With this new feature, both travel managers and travelers alike will be able to specify what attributes are important to them in order to optimize their fare results.

Goals 🎯

  • Allow travel manager to control preferences of travelers based on their traveler type.

  • Balance travel manager preferences against the individual traveler’s preferences.

  • Provide personalized and relevant fare results to the traveler.

Requirements & Research 📋

  • Reviewed persona library and past usability studies with UX researcher to understand users.

  • Reviewed concepts for this feature provided by product and met with product managers and technical leads to understand requirements and constraints.

Key learnings

  • Numbers and percentages feel arbitrary. We must make it clear how to rate attributes in a natural and intuitive way. Worked with product to determine the granularity of the ratings.

  • Must make the differentiation between preferences clear to the Travel Manager. Travel managers have control over their travel manager preferences and the weight of the individual traveler’s preferences.

  • Travel Managers will likely only have 3 - 5 traveler types. This helps create context for the number of traveler types a manager should be expecting to see in the application.

  • Accessibility is always key. Our design language accounts for most accessibility but is also important to keep accessibility front of mind.

Design ✍️

After completing research and defining requirements, I worked with product, tech and within my UX team to iterate on my design concepts.

Approval ✅

Present and sell design decisions to stakeholders. Show how design is able to achieve both business goals and create the best experience for users all within the technical limitations of the team. May have to come back to the team for a further design reviews if changes are needed.

Design and annotations will be delivered. After the approval is complete, I will deliver the design along with detailed annotations of components, custom CSS, padding, coloring and typography.

The Final Design ✨

Our final design we delivered included flexible controls for both travel agents and travelers alike.

Traveler type dashboard

Travel agents can now set traveler types and customize the search results for each type. Using the slider, travel agents can indicate how important something is (e.g. Price) to that traveler type and influence their search results when searching for flights. Travel agents can also adjust how much weight their preferences get against the traveler's preferences they set for themselves.

Customize traveler types

Travel agents can now add traveler types and adjust which one is the default. The default means that any new person who joins the company would automatically receive that traveler type's search results settings unless the travel agent assigns them to a different traveler type.

Personalize your own results

Travelers can personalize their own preferences to influence the sort order of their results when searching for flights. These preferences are weighed against the travel agent's preferences to create the ideal search results when booking a flight.
